New CPUs are smart enough to shut down before they start melting and motherboards have a temperature warning option (alarm beeping when the threshold is met) and a fail safe if the processor fails to start due to too much overclock. Of course residual heat will be a problem, even if the CPU itself doesn't overheat it can warm up the case so that other components do. Usually, the computer will just freeze or shutdown before any damage happens so the difficulty comes from getting the system stable, rather than from having to know when to quit pushing it further.

Overclocking does void warranties though so that's a good reason to not do it on any new stuff if you are in doubt.

Although, I did broke a GFX card (gf6600) not too long ago, just by using the "automatic overclocking" option from the drivers. I think its memory was damaged, because the card did boot but all the graphics would be garbled badly.
Ok. so my brother in law composed this from a local retailer's webpage.
the sub total price is 1111$. What do you guys say? Pros and cons please.

I need a new laptop for work purposes, but figured I might as well get one which runs ArmA 2. However, as you know laptops often aren't really equipped for gaming and ArmA 2 appears to be quite demanding, I'm having difficulties figuring out what to buy. Moreover, it's been years since I looked at computer parts, so I have no clue what's good and what's not. Some help and insight would be well appreciated, can you guys recommend anything to play ArmA2 on a laptop without spending a fortune?
I'll check with my brother how AA2 runs on his new flaptop, he got a new one only moths ago.
And I'll check your specs too Var, so far I totally agree with current choice of HD/DVD (brand)
Still didn't buy it yet, but soon I will!

What do you guys say about the below specs? will it run arma 2 well on high settings?

Intel® Desktop Board DX58SO
Intel® Core™ i7 Processor i7-950

G.Skill 6GB Kit DDR3 PC3-10666 1333MHZ 7-7-7-18 F3-10666CL7T-6GBPK

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1Tb 3.5 HDD 7200Rpm SATA II 32MB ST31000528AS

ASUS DRW-24B1ST Multi DVD±R/RW DRIVE Sata Black

Corsair VX Series 550W PSU CMPSU-550VXEU

Antec Three Hundred - The Versatile Case

Gigabyte nVidia Geforce GTX275 896Mb DDR3

Hi Var

Spec's looks good but I would buy a Samsung HD instead of Seagate, I have had bad experience with Seagate in the past along with Matrox too. Not sure about power consumption on i7 and the GFX card, 550W PSU might be slightly "underscale", compare price on 600-650 W PSU too (keep in mind you might wanna change e.g. GFX card later on)

Thanks Overlord! I will check the power consumption of the components and maybe change the Hard drive.

I have a question about the GFX card though. I want to get one of the GTX275 896Mb DDR3 type GFX's but there are so many... Can someone recommend on a specific type?
Asus in known to make stable and solid products, not "tuned and overclocked". XFX is also a brand that should be reliable. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think XFX is mainly aimed at gamers.
I would go with Asus, i have a long history with their components.
Ok! So Asus shall it be!

Gonna assemble my new PC tomorrow... Stay tuned!

Early Christmas!
I'm pretty sure the whole Christmas thing isn't that big of a deal in Israel ;D

Good luck with the new PC, Variable Smile

:o Oh, man, yeah. . .sorry!
Have fun putting it together and firing it up! ;D
Thanks a lot guys, and thank you all for the help. These are the specs of my new bride:

Intel® Core™ i7 Processor i7-950 + Motherboard DX58SO
3x2GB Corsair XMS3 Triple Channel
Asus GTX 275 896MB GDDR3 DX10 HDTV 2xDVI PCI-E
WD 1TB IntelliPower, 32MB, SATA II WD10EADS
Samsung SH-S223B DVD±RW x22 Black Sata
Corsair VX Series 550W PSU CMPSU-550VXEU
Antec Three Hundred - The Versatile Case

Got it all in a good price of about 1250 US$. It runs arma 2 very well with most of the settings on high.

Whose got arma2 by now?
Congrats with your new toy Var  ;D
I got AA2, just bought me a new monitor today and trying to set it up correctly. ArmA2 seems to run better on this one then my old CRT...
