System advice? - Marto - 09-09-2010

So I'm getting a new system soon...

I'm looking at the setup below:

Intel Core i7 950 Processor LGA1366 3.06GHz 8MB Cache CPU

mobo: eVGA P55V P55V mATX LGA1156

Gigabyte GTX 480 1536MB 2DVI

Thermaltake EVO Blue 650W w Active PFC 14cm Led Cable Management

Western Digital 2TB Black 64MB SATAII WD2001FASS

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium PCIe, Win 7, Realistic EAX® 5.0 sound effects, 3D audio, Dolby

Mach Xtreme 8GB (2x4G) Armor X DDR3 2000Mhz

Antec Three Hundred Tower Gaming Case- Black NO PSU

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM(Microsoft OEM Terms&condition apply)

Philips 230E1HSB 23inch Black Wide HMDI Full HD DVI Spk 5ms or
Benq E2420HD 24inch Wide 2ms HDMI DVI D-Sub Gloss Spker

Any advice on the above? How would it go with ARMA2/Arrowhead? Other programs I would use it for would be F4AF/Redviper, Jane's F/A-18 and OFP of course... Wink

What about SSD hard disk - is it worth it for ARMA2?

Regards,
Marto.

Re: System advice? - Misha - 09-09-2010

i7-950 CPU isn't compatible with that mobo, it requires 1366 socket motherboard and that one is 1156 socket.

If you stick with 1366 socket 6gb is enough, triple channel memory.

And maybe you'll need more powerful PSU to run all that.

I don't know about SSD, some say it helps Arma 2 to run better.

Generally, it's an overkill, I don't think you need that kind of machine to run Arma 2 properly. But Arma 2 is unpredictable in terms of performance on different machines, so, why not do some overkill just in case.

Re: System advice? - Zwobot - 09-09-2010

I can't give you any useful advice on what exactly to buy. I went into the shop, let them put together 2 or 3 alternatives, then I reviewed them for a week and then went back and told them what I wanted.

I'm looking forward to see you again ingame Marto  Smile

Re: System advice? - Osku - 09-09-2010

That's going to be a monster machine... and a monster bill. Wink It's more than enough to run Arma2.
After changing motherboard, all looks good.

SSD is worth buying as your OS drive, it gives nice boost for Windows. Not so sure about Arma2. I am currently running it on SSD, but haven't experienced much difference when compared to regular HDD. On the other hand, some users report that it helps with their LOD issues. If you plan to put Arma2 and Windows on the same SSD, you should go with ~60-80GB size.

At least pick two 1TB disks instead of one big 2TB, gives you some extra security. Make sure you don't rely your whole system on a single physical disk.

Re: System advice? - Overlord - 09-10-2010

WOW
That's a monster; how much do you plan to spend on a ArmA 2 gaming station?  Big Grin

I agree with Misha, get a bigget PSU (=<750W?) and in your part of the worl I would suggest a heavy cooling system, I recommend water-cooling, save you a lot of noise.

SSD will for sure boost ArmA 2 but all medals have a back-side, SSD come with a price tag Sad But 60-80 GB would be enough for your OS and ArmA 2, the rest you can put on other disks. Dunno if 64 MB cache on SATA2-drives will give you more than a more expensive system, 32 MB is enough, but if I had unlimited founds I would go for two 1 TB SATA3 disks. I would strongly recomend 2 identical monitors if you plan to run dual-view, saves you a lot of trouble.

But main thing is, we look forward to see you in ArmA 2, remember to buy combined operations, NOT FROM STEAM!!!!

Re: System advice? - Marto - 09-11-2010

Thanks guys for the advice,

re motherboard/socket - don't know how I missed that... thanks Misha.

So I think that I'll get an SSD for Win and ARMA2... Overlord convinced me.

And good point re 2 HDD instead of 1 - thanks Osku.

Increased PSU too.

Still haven't looked into the cooling.

And RAM- I think it is triple channel?

I can chop and change parts before I get it though...

One more: If I have ARMA2 do I just need to get OA?

Marto.

Re: System advice? - Marto - 09-11-2010

Also, will the soundblaster be much of an improvement for sound - or is it unnecessary?

Re: System advice? - Osku - 09-11-2010

Quote:Still haven't looked into the cooling.

You should be fine with the Antec case. Just add couple of 120mm (1000rpm) fans into it. One fan in front for intake, and 2 fans on the rear/top for blowing out the hot air. The Antec might already include some fans, did the product description say anything about it?

Quote:And RAM- I think it is triple channel?

Those 3x2GB's will be - on the motherboard you selected.

Quote:One more: If I have ARMA2 do I just need to get OA?

Yep, then just get standalone OA.

Quote:Also, will the soundblaster be much of an improvement for sound - or is it unnecessary?

It gives you better sound quality for sure, stick with the Titanium..

With the other parts there's not much difference. Only the SSD: see if you can find OCZ Vertex 2, Intel X25 or G.Skill Phoenix. If not, then take Corsair rather than A-RAM.

Re: System advice? - Overlord - 09-11-2010

Just consider a ASUS mobo instead of ASRock when you put so much money in your system, ASRock is Asus too, but "low-end"...
Check out Osku's advice about SSD, for myself I run Intel X25 (both on my stationary and "flap-top". The important here is what controller and memory-chips used by manufacturer.

Marto.

Y'know, this is all well and good only if we can be assured that your courageous and highly informative "Notes" pages make their way to Arma2. . .  ;D

Re: System advice? - Variable - 03-29-2011

What's up with your new rig Marto, and you joining ArmA 2 coop nights?

Re: System advice? - Lobanak - 03-29-2011

Ask Zopzodeman about his new pc. He put a lot of money in. Something with PCIe-SSD and only best things available at the moment. If I remember right, arround 1600 EURO!!!

Lobanak, can you PM me his email? If he's got such a nice rig, why not put it to use and play coop with us? Wink

Re: System advice? - Lobanak - 03-30-2011

hmm... have to ask for mail. I always send SMS or call him directly  :o

Same town we live in  ;D and I know him since school-time (arround 20+ years now)
