how to use 3D editor in Arma2 - TonyMarony - 02-15-2011

Hola,
as we had a short talk on TS last week, i will post my ideas of how to get around with the 3D editor.

1. How to activate the editor:
Go to the MAIN screen and press alt+e. You will find pop up the Island selction Dialogue. Chosse your favorite island and press ok.

2. How to basically handle the editor:
You will now see a different kind of editor gui. This is the main 3D Editor screen, which is different from the standard editor in a grafical way and also in the way to do some things. Most of them are quite obvious, but for the beginning it is vital to put first a Center and second a group. Then you can place all kind of units. To place units of the opposite side, place a center and a group with the correct side in it. All placed units will be grouped with the group you created before. You can change the groups afterwards or continue creating different groups just when you create the units aswell.

3. How to use the files created in the 3D editor:
when you hit the "Save" butteon in the 3D Editor, you will get an sqf-File, aswell as a "biedi" file in where all the created stuff is placed by setpos. This is not much what we want to get, if we want to use the file for further editing in the standard editor. To convert the biedi-file into a sqm file, you can use "SHK_3de_conv". This little program just does make a new mission.sqm file. Be aware, that it is overwriting any existing mission.sqm file! Download: http://armed-assault.de/news/biedi---sqm-converter.html
Description of how to use the Converter: Use the Addon File as mod when you are editing to fix some placement problems. Drop all other files in your missions directory and drag the biedi file onto the converter.exe file. Now the converter will take a few seconds and will create a mission.sqm file. This file can be opened and edited as usual in the standard editor.

4. How to use 3d Editor with all the arma hosues stuff
downlaod the jon-C5 Editor to have easily access to all houses and objects used in Arma2.

Run the file as mod.

Note: The addons are accessible in the 3D Editor aswell as in the standard editor! The mission will not need any of this addons to run!

Have fun!

Thanks Tony, a helpful article. Now my another question; is it possible to convert SQM-file for use in 3D editor?

I dont think, that this will work.

I think its expected to place things first in 3DE and then do the rest of the stuff in the 2D Editor.
