Might be a few things people haven't come across before, or have just forgotten, that are worth checking out.

Me too, I haven't played any of them although I'm sure I own Sid Meier's Ace Patrol from one of the humble bundles so I might give it a try later.

Re: PC Gamer's Top 20 Wargames - Alwarren - 03-06-2015

I played (and still play sometimes) DCS World, Enemy Engaged: Comanche Vs. Hokum (as well as its predecessor, Apache Vs. Havoc), IL-2 Sturmovik and of course Falcom 4.0.

DCS World doesn't really need an introduction I guess.

The Enemy Engaged series are still available at GOG.com, great helicopter games (which are, in general, quite rare). Graphics are no longer on par with modern games, but I liked the dynamic warfare mode which basically keeps a war going on around you, generating sorties for you as you play.

Falcon 4.0 was one of the best flight sim experiences I ever had, and it deserves to be on this list. It has a 1000+ pages manual (enough to kill someone with), and a similar way of generating a war around you. The Korea theater was also something rarely seen in games. My favorite part of it was the air traffic control in the game. When you came back from a bombing run or a CAP mission, you would fly home onto one of the airbases (Seoul was always busy as hell) and they would guide your whole flight (usually 4 F-16's) in. You couldn't just land or just request permission to land. It was all very convincing. I remember one time when Varanon and me played a mission together we were waiting almost 15 minutes before it was our time to land.
I guess that would put off some people, but for me, it was extremely immersive.

Bit pissed off that there is no Arma/Operation Flashpoint on the list -_-

lol, I've pretty much only played the same games as you Alwarren, with the exception of IL-2 (I'm not really into WW2 flight sims, too damn hard to hit anything!) and I haven't really done much with Falcon BMS except learn how to start it up (and I've probably forgotten that now but I'm planning to focus on it more than DCS once I get time for flight simming again, as I do like the idea of the immersive campaign, which DCS lacks).

I'm sure I was able to play Enemy Engaged when I was younger but I find it quite confusing now, which is a bit weird when I can get my head round DCS! Need to study that manual again, as it is great fun once you get the hang of it and is surprisingly good considering it's age (it's still being actively modded as well, which only makes it better).

I've think I've got Close Combat and Combat Mission somewhere (not sure which versions) but I've not had time to get into them yet.

Oh, yeah. I got Silent Hunter III and IV in a sale on gamersgate last year. I gave III to my Dad as I thought he might enjoy it and it's meant to be the better one (although not everyone agrees and PC Gamer reckon IV's better) but I might play IV myself one day.

Steel Armor - Blaze of War http://store.steampowered.com/app/286280/ looks pretty good but no multiplayer lets it down, as tanks need a crew and relying on the AI or constantly jumping between seats doesn't really work for me.

It was on 50% sale on gamersgate earlier but it's back up to full price again now. Might be worth keeping an eye out if it takes your fancy though. http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-SABW/steel-armor-blaze-of-war
