For me, I had a friend who would not shut up about OFP, kept on with really cool stories about the game. Then probably in about 2005, I saw a copy on a trip into PC World, bought it, played the first couple of missions and on the first combat mission I realised that this was a game where you don't win missions, you survive them. And honestly, I really loved that, and from that point I was addicted. It only got worse when I discovered mods and then multiplayer. I skipped ArmA 1 because of lack of a computer capable of playing it, and then only got into ArmA 2 in 2010 when I got a laptop capable of playing it. Since then, my overriding aim when buying new hardware has been "Is this useful for ArmA?"
