Wow, another novel. Actually it's not a novel but a pretty accurate description of the mission. I suspect Kurtz to be a war correspondent in disguise
For the "auto-detect" stuff, it only affects mines (mines have its own class), satchels have never been an issue. The way I think it works is like when a mine blow off the AIs detect (knows about) location of the player who put it (if in range etc). It's quite noticable in one of Lenin's "Stanch Rangers" mission on trinity.
