Variable, I totally agree with you. I have never used the ST HUD. But I must admit I've thought about it often, since the constant looking around could also be considered a slight immersion breaker (And it can be slightly annoying). After all, a Average Human has the FOV of around 180 degrees. So the ~80 degree fov that the screen gives is of course a huge factor considering realism on that part.
I find it reasonable at least for newer players to get used to the formations, orientation and overall team movement with the ST HUD. But I don't think anyone should get dependent on it. Players should at all times be aware of the nearby friendly positions. And when this is not the case, it is the fault of the player himself, if he has ignored the Comms. And the fault of the leader, if he has not made sure that the team is aware of the friendlies around one's team.
