Headhunter Redux
God damn, what a ride.
Our team was covertly inserted onto the beach and made its way to meet our FIA contacts. They were standing by a CSAT soldier corps and informed us that Col. Namdar was visiting the Kamino firing range. After assessing the topography and calculating lines of sights I decided, in contradiction to everything that I am, to go for the silent, one- shot-one-kill approach. We slowly climbed the lighthouse hill in fear of detection. Luckily, the Persians didn't it guard although it controled their firing range. Big mistake. In the last stretch I kept the bulk of the team behind, and transformed from a SPECOP team leader into a spotter. Stag, our sniper, and I, crawled the last few meters and the Kamino firing range finally came into view. I started to look for our target. After a few sweeps with the laser range finder, an officer came into view. That's the Colonel! He approached a group of soldiers, looks like he is going to inspect them, which means he is about to stop, giving Stag a chance to conveniently snipe him. For the last time I called out the range and bam! The colonel is down. We grabbed our gear and quickly evacuated the vantage point.
We got back to the FIA gathering point and took two offroad vehicles. I decided to hit the comm tower next. Our target was a Tempest type truck. Our small convoy cut through the forest and I decided to cover the last stretch over the road. That was a mistake. A patrol of CSAT infantry came into view right after the bend I quickly tried to run them over, missing them both, and allowing them to release some shots. Damn! We are exposed. As I drove through, the operators at the back opened up on them, and the rear vehicle managed to run them over. The quick fire exchange cost Misha's life, but we had to press on. We proceeded and came into view of what looked like a stronghold that FIA attempted to attack and failed, judging by the corpses that were laying around.
That was the first time we came under accurate fire, the enemy has responded fast after detecting us. An Ifrit attacked, and deployed a QRF on the side of the hill. Stag manned an abandoned M2 gun and opened up, suppressing the dismounts. I followed with 40mm rounds to finish them off. And then the ground exploded around us. Mortar rounds! I was thinking "we have to get the fuck out, and fast. The objective is not far away so we might still hit it before reinforcements arrive to boost its defenses". Too bad we had to climb a steep hill to get to it.
The climb ended. We set up on the narrow side of the perimeter fence to limit the sector in which the enemy might be. Split into two teams, Red on the right and Blue on the left, we started sweeping the perimeter. contact was made with some sentries, good, it looks like the reinforcements had not arrived yet. Here's the target Tempest truck! Fuck, it's manned. Fuck, it's running away! We have to prevent it from escaping. I quickly jumped into an Ifrit, ordering Alwarren to join me, and the chase was on. I drove North and couldn't spot it. Stag reported over the comms that the truck had left to the east. I corrected my course and saw it. I drove in front of it, taking advantage of the Ifrit's superior speed and traversability. Alwarren jumped off to kill the driver and then it turned and moved away from us. Damn it! I left Alwarren there and chased it yet again, this time trying to ram it. That Tempest beast didnât' even budge. Ok, time for a different plan. I moved ahead of it and physically blocked it. It finally stopped. I jumped out and emptied a full mag into the driver seat. Job's done. All the while our guys were killing infantry on the hill. I ordered our demolition expert, Varanon, to grab one of the OPFOR vehicles and destroy the tempest truck and I got back to the comm tower hill. We wasted a lot of time and the enemy managed to put up an effective counter attack. We fought hard, fending off enemy teams from multiple sides. At one point an enemy helicopter attempted to deploy reinforcements on the side of the hill but when it slowed down to land, an HE rocket killed its engine, and made it fall on the hill. it slid inelegantly
and blew up in flames.
We found an enemy mortar and used it on the remaining target, after a while we received confirmation that our target there has been killed. Good, we won't have to fight through the now ready enemies there.
After losing Varanon to enemy fire, and taking out the team that killed him, I got back to my trusty commandeered Ifrit and ordered the team in. We took a lot of fire. Thank the Goddess that even Iranian vehicles have English labels... here's the switch. A smoke screen bloomed right in front of the vehicle. Stag moved through it and boarded the vehicle. All in, time to go! I reversed down the hill until we were clear from the enemy fire, turned around and raced away from the crime scene. We moved offroad. Apparently, I completely missed an enemy Marid APC that managed to land some rounds into our back just as we crested down and broke its line of fire, the Ifrit was dead. Remembering that FIA left an assault boat for us in the rendezvous point, we decided to get back there. Moving out of the woods we saw two silhouettes there. Are these more FIA fighters? That would be odd since we saw that the guys we met leaving the area. Getting closer we managed to identify the typical CSAT headgear, the enemy has found the gather point. After assigning targets, and receiving the "Ready to fire" reports, I gave the order to fire. Good, they never knew what hit them.
That was one hell of a mission, saturated with events. Silent kill and successful evacuation, close encounter in a convoy and using fire from vehicle, cool firefight on the hill, shooting down a chopper, violent car chase with the Tempest truck, and great enemy that tested our nerves. Awesome mission Stag!
